Student Blog: My First Year Studying in Oxford – What Is It Really Like?
Personal Blog / ExperienceHi everyone!
Exactly twelve months ago, I packed two suitcases and moved to England to start my undergraduate degree in History at Oxford. Before arriving, I had watched plenty of films about historic British universities, and I was nervous that everyone would be overly formal or unfriendly. Today, after finishing my first year, I can tell you that my expectations were completely wrong!
The first two weeks, known as "Freshers' Week", were surprisingly exhausting. Every college has its own dining hall, library, and student union, and there were hundreds of clubs to join—from rowing on the River Isis to amateur drama and debating societies. At first, I felt overwhelmed by the reading lists. Unlike school, we only have a few lectures a week, and most of our learning happens in weekly "tutorials", where just two students discuss their essays directly with a professor for an hour.
Getting around the city turned out to be another pleasant surprise. Nobody drives a car in the centre of Oxford! I bought a second-hand bicycle during my second week, which saves me a huge amount of money on bus fares and gets me to lectures in ten minutes—even though cycling in the rain took some getting used to.
My verdict after one year: while the academic workload during the eight-week terms is intense, the support from tutors and fellow students is incredible. Best of all, cooking dinner with my flatmates in our student house has helped me make friends from all over the world and stick to a sensible monthly budget.
If you are thinking of applying to study in the UK, don't hesitate—it is an unforgettable experience!
Yours,
Sophie
