The Brighton Repair Café: Fixing Things Together Instead of Throwing Them Away
Magazine ArticleHas your toaster stopped working, does your favourite shirt have a tear, or has your old radio gone silent? For many people today, that is a reason to throw the item straight into the bin and buy a brand-new one. Not in Brighton: here, on the first Saturday of every month, local residents meet at the community "Repair Café".
The project was founded two years ago by Arthur Pendelton, a retired electrical engineer. "We throw away far too many things nowadays that could easily be fixed in just a few minutes," the 66-year-old explains. Together with ten unpaid volunteers—including carpenters, seamstresses, and electronics enthusiasts—he helps visitors repair their broken belongings free of charge.
The idea is simple: each guest brings one faulty item from home. Tools and spare parts are ready on the tables. The owner repairs the object themselves, while receiving patient guidance and practical tips from the experts. While people wait or work on their repairs, they can enjoy homemade carrot cake and a cup of tea.
"It is not just about protecting the environment," Arthur says with a smile. "Many older people also drop by simply so they don't feel lonely and can have a friendly chat with their neighbours." The repair help is completely free, although a small donation box for new tools and tea sits by the exit. Nearly 70 percent of all items brought in leave the café in full working order again.
